Young risk professional of the year: Claire Joinson, Covea

Claire Joinson, capital manager at Covéa Insurance, has been praised for her "exceptional" contributions to the firm's Solvency II regulatory reporting.

The information she gathered turned into a "very well packaged" report that was "incredibly well received" by the executive leadership team and board, winning praise from the chairman in the process.

She achieved this while also offering part-time support on a secondment to the finance department and helped deliver annual quantitative reporting templates. Those working alongside her gained more understanding into how insurance financials change between UK GAAP and Solvency II basis, as she mentored them to ensure smooth reporting for future submissions.

Colleagues also noted that when delivering the public and regulatory solvency reports, Joinson seemed "genuinely buoyed" and recognised the opportunity of trying something new that would potentially provide a valued output to stakeholders, notably policyholders and non-executive directors.

Joinson has gained a broad range of knowledge in risk management, finance and accounting throughout her 13 years at the company. She joined Covéa in 2004 straight from university as a trainee accountant. She then completed the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants qualification and held a number of different roles within finance, progressing up to finance manager before moving into the risk function as a capital manager in late 2015.

Joinson's current responsibilities include Solvency II narrative reporting and own risk and solvency Assessment (Orsa). She was hugely instrumental in the delivery of the Orsa for the general insurance company during 2017.
