Roger Dix, Wesleyan

Roger Dix, chief risk officer at UK insurer Wesleyan, possesses a rare combination of talents: a sharp mind, well-trained in actuarial and risk management issues, together with the ability to communicate them. During his 35+ years in the insurance sector he has done much to shape thinking around those issues, and has been in the vanguard of defining the role of the risk function and the chief risk officer. Generous in spirit and with a friendly wit, Dix has been a real asset to the insurance sector.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Dealing with, and managing the consequences of, unplanned or unexpected activity. I also enjoy observing how my team's abilities influence our business – we are very much seen as part of the business, not apart from the business.

Who or what has had the largest influence on your work?

There have been a number of colleagues throughout my career across several disciplines and organisations that have influenced my work – too many to single out. I was also influenced by voluntary sector work I performed when I was younger, which taught me more about people than any management course.

What is the biggest issue you are dealing with right now (insurance related)?

General Data Protection Regulation. I accept this is a universal challenge but it's a very big one for a 176-year-old insurer! More specifically though, enhancing our conduct risk framework and accompanying regime, so it is less soft, but not so hard that it becomes box ticking.

How do you expect the insurance business to evolve in the coming years?

I have pondered this ever since I first entered the industry 40 years ago, with the common theme being nothing evolves fast in it! With that caveat, I expect customers to be more demanding of services compatible with an internet age, which means more digital access and lower charges.

They will also expect simpler products and if the internet age means less form filling, then so much the better. However, in the investment space, I still see the need for face to face advice/contact, but that could be by online means (so Skype or FaceTime, for example).

What interests do you have outside work?

I am a keen skier and (fair weather) road cyclist, with regular stints on a rowing machine to maintain my fitness. I relax – if that is the right word – by being a season ticket holder at Northampton Saints rugby football club, a keen supporter of Garsington Opera and baking cakes.
