The Convex Seascape Survey has been highly commended by InsuranceERM in the climate and sustainability collaboration of the year award category for its five-year, global research effort into seascape carbon stores and their vulnerability to human impact.
Bringing together Convex Insurance, the Blue Marine Foundation and the University of Exeter, the programme convenes countless scientists and multiple partner universities to generate open-source data on where carbon is stored, how it is sequestered, and how activities such as trawling affect stored carbon stocks.
Judges praised the strength of the partnership between the private and charitable sectors, its interdisciplinary depth and global reach, and the way the project is translating cutting-edge science into influence and action.
Field campaigns span locations from the UK to New Zealand and Saudi Arabia, complemented by modelling and mapping tools such as air–sea CO₂ flux animated maps and the PALTIDE app to identify likely accumulation areas.
The initiative pairs research with significant education and outreach that has truly made an impact.
