PCAF developing methodologies for insurance claims and personal non-life

The Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) has confirmed seven priority topics for its next standard development cycle from 2026 to 2028.

The industry-led initiative creates greenhouse gas methodologies that improve transparency around the financial sector’s emissions associated with financial activities.

The initial priority areas identified include new methodologies for asset-based finance, insurance claims and personal non-life insurance.

Other areas include work on inventory fluctuation, transition finance and agricultures, forestry and land-use change.

Working groups for the above will be established along with an exploratory working group for export credit agencies to explore the development of dedicated greenhouse gas accounting guidance under the PCAF standard.

PCAF has already established methodologies for treaty reinsurance and motor, commercial and project insurance.

Angelica Afanador, executive director of PCAF, said it was “committed to empowering financial institutions worldwide to measure and disclose their financed, facilitated, and insurance-associated emissions”, and developing new methods was integral to this.
