Bermuda's re/insurance industry battens down for Humberto

Bermudan re/insurers are bracing for the arrival of hurricane Humberto later this week.

Humberto is gaining strength and is forecast to become a major (category 3) hurricane, the third of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season.

According to the latest US National Hurricane Center forecast, the storm is due to skirt north of Bermuda but will bring tropical storm-strength winds and heavy rain to the island on Wednesday.

The pending storm has led to the postponement of the Bermuda International Life & Annuity conference, organised by Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers (Biltir) association.

The event was scheduled to have its welcome reception on Wednesday and continue all day Thursday.

A spokesperson for Biltir said the organisation had yet to set a new date for the conference.

At InsuranceERM’s conference in New York yesterday, delegates arriving from Bermuda were preparing to cut short their trips to the US and return home to be with their families.

The Bermuda Royal Gazette yesterday reported the island’s minister for national security, Wayne Caines, saying the government was monitoring the situation and no decision had been made yet on which services might be halted.
