Fabian Uffer: People risk and political risk are emerging challenges

Scor's group chief risk officer Fabian Uffer reviews the key ERM developments of 2022, and lists the emerging risks to watch

What was the most positive ERM development of the year?

Fabian UfferBeing able to meet people in person again. Risk management is talking to people, and we do that best in person.

What was the biggest ERM disappointment of the year?

I don't have any specific disappointments.

What emerging risks are you most concerned about?

On the emerging front, I’m personally concerned about political / society risks in the sense that societies are becoming more polarised, and this has a direct impact on the well-being of humans and the planet. While no longer emerging, but maybe more developing risks, I would have the classics: geopolitical and climate change risks. Another one is more generally people risks, which we define quite broadly, for example, mental health risks, to the war for talent.

How concerned are you about geopolitical risk in 2023?

It is one of the main risks where we spend a lot of time on. The situation is complex, fast moving and has the potential to have a huge impact. We also need to be aware of our own bias when assessing geopolitical risk, but overall, I’m unfortunately quite pessimistic on this one.

What's your favourite part of the Christmas holiday season?

Just the simple things like spending time with family and friends... and also enjoying a bit of skiing in the Swiss Alps.
